If you need a change of pace from the scenic fjords and mountains, it might be worth checking out one of the many gyms, clubs, or classes in the Stavanger area.
Fitness facilities in Stavanger have vastly improved over the past few years which means there is more choice and levels of quality available than ever. Most gyms have staggered early opening hours and limited hours on Sundays.
Yoga, climbing, pilates and more
When the University’s sports centre SiS opened, it brought with it a climbing wall, squash and basketball facilities, modern equipment and popular classes.
Elixia has opened several new locations, with the Madla facility being their newest. While small, it is an improvement on the St Olav’s location, which is showing its age and is in need of updating.
Sats is a well-located facility in the city centre just near to the Skagen Hotel. The regular weight lifting and aerobic equipment are outdatedand many pieces are in need of replacement or refurbishment. Group classes are reportedly good at all locations, especially spinning, pilates and yoga. The SiS gym even has 80′s aerobics, complete with leotards and leg warmers! All of these gyms offer “try outs”, generally for a week at a time, so you can try them out before enrolling.
Yoga: Many of these gyms offer yoga, but Atha Yoga specialises in it, and is in a cool location near Tau Scene andOstehuset Ost. They offer yoga for pregnant women, mamma yoga, among other courses, and it is all taught by certified instructors. You can pay by the visit, with a clip card, or subscribe to the centre.
Clubs: Football/Handball/etc… search the area directory listing different clubs: There are also Local Sports Associations listed with the SPIN Guide.
Cycling is great here too! Some cycling routes are reviewed here.
Kayaking: Check out the Stavanger Kayak Club! The club’s clubhouse is located in the cellar of Mississippi Friluftssenteret, Stokka, only a few meters from the edge of Stokkavannet lake. Not only is this a
great way to meet people (locals and expats!) they offer a variety of interesting courses. The club owns a selection of sea, flat water, polo and river kayaks.
Running/jogging is wonderful in Stavanger. You can train most days of the year – if you have the right equipment! Read some reviews of popular running areas here.
